In the digital age where so much value is put on the intangible, the fine creators at Rare Bits believe in the totally tangible! We formed to a common bond over our love of the comics medium and the web potential, something you can see in each of our four contributors’ comics. Our work starts out as ink on paper but is enjoyed all over the world via these tiny bits.

Elaine Rich is another person who understands the tangible arts in at theoretical computer science. Using her unique skill set she brings the most amazing quilts to comfortable, warm fruition. This quilt, Five Generations, combines some of my personal favorites: craft, rainbows and Q*bert. Okay, not actually that old video game but the blocks remind me of it. The individual blocks are actual photos of Rich’s in-laws spanning five dimensions. It’s like scrapbook you can snuggle with during a movie  or receive that sixth generation’s baby spit.

Meanwhile, Cornell University professor Daina Taimina created hyperbolic knit and crochet space! On display at the Institute for Figuring (sounds awesome!), these planes help students and lovers of learning everywhere connect a few more synapses. If you have ever knit before you know that counting is especially important when increasing and decreasing the ‘planes’ or creating the turn of a sock. Check out the display for much, much more. My own knitting needles are collecting a bit o’ dust at the moment but I think I’ll break into my stash sometime soon, dear reader.
